Images of: Faux Histories, False Recordings, Mis-representations
Subject (subtext):taxonomy of painting subjects - animals,
landscapes, still lifes, etc. ( i.e., the banal).
Context (text): representing; still the same picture.
This work seeks to explore the seduction of appearances through
recognition of the mechanics of appearances. These paintings exist in
(and as) a web of references. They are referential, but they refer only
to problematize the activity of referencing. The activity of our relationship
to referencing becomes the subject, its very schizophrenia a strategy.
(". . . to get out, go deeper" - Barthes.)
Within this painting model, we explore how painting possesses the
flexibility of being both neutral image and active concept. This work
attempts to explore the conditions of content, thus allowing the process
of understanding those conditions to become the 'content' of the work.
