| Artist's Statement |
Representations of nature never 'mirror' nature and it is not my intention to do so. My drawings and paintings are an exploration of the natural world but they are also a metaphor of the emotional, cultural and urban environment I live in.
The shapes and foliage I create rarely bear close relation to a real botanic specimen, they are not even the abstracted 'photogenic drawing' as John Herscheldescribed his plant prints made in 1839, but they are inspired by such
works and also by fabric patterns found in prints, lace or weaves.
Being from Miami originally, I am most interested in the aggressive and lush plants of the tropics and these are the plants that invade the canvas. Their relationship to man as food or shelter or as a hindrance to him is also fascinating to me. I reduce the 'foliage' to a monochromatic language to dramatize the drawing (or painting) with 'light' and its negative, creating a flat image; a
pattern that is very separate from its original three dimensional functional complexity.
